Belarus detains leading human rights activist

None

Belarussian financial police have detained the former Soviet republic's leading human rights activist Ales Belyatsky on tax evasion charges, his organisation Vesna-96 said on Friday, denouncing the case as political.

The group said Belyatsky, 48, who founded Vesna-96 in the late 1990s and has run it ever since, was detained late on Thursday by the Department of Financial Investigations of the State Control Committee. The department could not be reached for comment. (Reuters)
