1 dead in clashes in southern Yemen

Security forces killed one person in southern Yemen during a protest against imports of qat, a mildly addictive stimulant, from the northern half of the country, a medical official said.

The clashes took place in the town of Sayoun in Hadramawt province, about 350 miles southeast of Sanaa, where thousands of residents rallied to pressure local authorities to provide basic necessities like fuel and wheat instead of importing qat from the north. Many Yemenis chew the mild narcotic daily. (AP)
