Video: New American ambassador to Israel: US committed to developing missile defense technology
VIDEO - "The US has a long-standing and iron clad commitment to Israel's security and one of the most important examples of this commitment is in our cooperation on missile defense technology," new US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro said during a visit to an Iron Dome battery in the south.
"There are many examples of this (commitment). We work together on the Arrow system, we work together on David's Sling but perhaps the most successful and one that has been proven in real-time operation is the Iron Dome system," he said.
According to Shapiro, "After President Obama's visit to Sderot in 2008 during his presidential campaign, he promised that the US would continue to support Israel in every way that is necessary and in every way that is possible in defending itself against the threats it faces.
"He saw in Sderot the results of the threat of missiles and rockets coming from Hamas and other groups in Gaza. Early in his term, he requested from Congress and Congress provided $200 million to accelerate production of the Iron Dome system. That request was already in process when in April we saw the first success of this technology, the incredible accomplishment of Israeli ingenuity together with the well-trained operators of the IDF to demonstrate that they can actually defeat rockets fired at civilian populations," Shapiro proclaimed.
