Germany marks construction of the Berlin Wall

The mayor of Germany's capital says the construction of the Berlin Wall 50 years ago must be a constant reminder to stand up for freedom and democracy. Klaus Wowereit said Saturday "the bitter experience" of seeing Berlin being divided by the wall tore apart the country as a whole, just as it separated the city's streets, neighbors and families.
German President Christian Wulff and Chancellor Angela Merkel are also attending the commemoration ceremony in Berlin where parts of the Wall and an attached surveillance tower now form a museum. (AP)
