France says it has $10.9 billion in Libyan assets

The French president's office says that French banks hold 7.6 billion euros ($10.9 billion) in frozen Libyan assets, amid an international push to free up such funds for the Libyan opposition.

Freeing up Libyan funds frozen by a UN resolution will be central to a conference in Paris on Thursday on how to help the Libyan rebels after the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi. President Nicolas Sarkozy's office says it has asked the UN sanctions committee for an exemption to release 1.5 billion euros of the total held in French banks, and is expecting authorization by the end of the week. (AP)
