The UN 66th General Assembly has opened at its New York City Headquarters on Tuesday. Qatar has assumed the position of assembly president while Lebanon is the current president of the Security Council for September – leaving both senior positions in the hands of Arab countries.
Next week, the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is set to speak at the assembly as well as the Israeli representative. It is yet to be decided whether Israel's speaker will be President Shimon Peres or Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. (Yitzhak Benhorin, Washington)
