Erdogan's message to Jews: Shana Tova

Turkish prime minister offers warm well-wishes to Turkey's Jews, ignores Israel

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erodgan joined other world leaders Thursday, offering his well-wishes on the occasion of the Rosh Hashana holiday.

The Turkish PM, who in the past year repeatedly issued scathing attacks on Israel, offered the Jewish community in his country warm wishes for the New Jewish year. Notably, he did not mention Israel in his statement.

''There are many different beliefs and cultures living together for centuries in our country," Erdogan said in his festive message. "Special days and holidays add special color to our community life."

The prime minister concluded his message by wishing Turkey's Jews a "healthy and fertile" new year.

Despite his friendly tone, only two days ago Erdogan slammed the Jewish state, calling for UN sanctions against Israel.

In an interview with Time magazine the Turkish leader said that had prospective UN sanctions been imposed on Israel "the Palestine-Israel conflict would have been resolved a long time ago."

Appearing at the UN General Assembly Erdogan claimed that the US approach towards the Middle East peace process had failed.
