Widow of rocket fatality gives birth

Six weeks after Yossi Shushan’s death, his son is born; I felt Yossi in room while giving birth, widow says

Lilach Shushan, whose husband was killed in a rocket attack in August, gave birth on Saturday at Beersheba’s Soroka Medical Center.

Lilach’s husband, Yossi, 38, was killed when a Grad rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit his car while he was driving in Beersheba.

“It was hard not to have Yossi here,” Lilach said. “I thought about him. I felt him here with us in the room, in front of me, while I was giving birth.”

Lilach was taken to the hospital around 1 pm by ambulance, and gave birth to a boy – Shimon, named after Yossi’s father.

“I don’t know yet what will be his middle name,” she said.

Lilach wished to thank Beersheba’s mayor, who has provided his support over the difficult period after her husband’s death.

The baby weighed 3.88 kg (8.6 pounds) at birth, and was one of the 30 babies born at the Soroka Medical Center on Yom Kippur. Magen David Adom emergency crews transported a total of 122 women at labor to hospitals around the country. Two babies were delivered by paramedics.
