Go back in time with Harvest Festival

Ein Yael Museum's Sukkot activities include recreated Roman market, bow and arrow contest, actors presenting ancient production methods

The Sukkot Harvest Festival in the Hands-on Museum of Ein Yael takes visitors back 2,000 years.

The festival includes a wide variety of attractions for the whole family: See actors displaying ancient production methods and actors dressed up as Roman soldiers and pilgrims making their way to Jerusalem; a wide range of workshops for the children recreating ancient methods such as pottery and agriculture; milking goats; shows for the children and music.

In the recreated Roman market, visitors will meet with artisans just as they were 2,000 years ago: Weavers, blacksmiths, shoe makers, potters working on the potter's wheel, and perfume from oils and fragrant plants.

There will also be street performances, actors, musicians and a market filled with the Sukkot Harvest Produce. Visitors will be invited to take part in bow and arrow contests.

There will be a large variety of creative workshops for the whole family: Making flutes from reeds, weaving reeds into baskets, making pottery on potter's wheels, making mosaics and painting frescoes, weaving wool, making paper from different types of plant material, recycling materials to create decorations for the sukkah.

In addition, there will be tours of the threshing floor and the excavated Roman villa.

Visitors can also enjoy just being in the terraces and listening to music played on instruments as they were 2,000 years ago.

A play produced by the "KumKum" theatrical group, which has met great success in 15 different countries around the world, will be presented every day.

The performance is exciting, full of fantasy and very thought provoking. It deals with the relationship between humans and nature and is accompanied by live Irish music.

In the evenings there will be a wine and cheese festival. Come and taste the wines!

The Hands on Museum of Ein Yael is situated in the Refaim valley in Jerusalem. Extending over 10 acres, the museum gives visitors an experience that has almost disappeared in our modern lives: The relationship between man and the soil on which he depends.

See the reconstructed Roman market, the tavern, the artisan shops, the petting zoo, the terraces, the mountain stream, the shady trees, ancient farming tools, olive trees, and amongst all this magical Biblical scenery the whole family can take part in ancient creative workshops.

The Sukkot Harvest Festival in Ein Yael will take place on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday on the intermediary days of Sukkot (October 16-18) between 10 am-4 pm.

Entrance fees: NIS 40 ($10.5) per child and NIS 25 ($6.5) per adult. The entrance fee includes a performance by the "KumKum" theatrical group.
