Don’t let the radicals win

Op-ed: Jaffa resident urges fellow citizens not to let Jewish radicals ruin coexistence

The desecration of the graves at the Muslim and Christian cemeteries in Jaffa is a despicable act that calls for a decisive response from law enforcement officials, in order to prevent such cases from repeating. At the same time, we must use our heads.

We must not resort to dangerous generalizations that could play into the hands of radicals. Despite the great pain, we must let our minds lead the way and as much as possible stay away from emotional conduct that will only cause damage.

Immediately upon the discovery of the hateful messages spray painted on the tombstones, hundreds of Muslim and Christian residents poured to the cemeteries and expressed this anger over what they referred to as “the uselessness of the police.” Some people also linked the vandalism acts in Jaffa to the torching of the mosque in Tuba Zangaria about a week ago.

It is true that any kind of crime of this type requires intensive police work to nab the perpetrators. However, with all due respect to other cities, in Jaffa this requires a much greater effort. We must not treat Jaffa as “just another city.”

Restraint and wisdom

The police have a national, moral and security-related duty to do everything in their power to bring the scoundrels behind this act to justice as soon as possible. This must be done before acts of this type become a trend adopted by marginal provocateurs on the other side of the court.

Jaffa’s residents, both the Arabs and Jews, must conduct themselves with restraint and wisdom in order to overcome the current crisis. We must not forget that those behind the contemptible acts are a bunch of people who seek to undermine the wonderful, delicate fabric that exists in Jaffa.

The school of thought adhered to by these pyromaniacs preaches for the setting of fires at sensitive locations such as Jaffa, in the hopes that the flames would destroy any plant and living thing on the face of this earth. We, the residents of Jaffa, have the duty not to play into their hands.
