Report: Israel returns body of Palestinian terrorist

Palestinians say Israel repatriated body of DFLP member who was killed during 1976 clash with IDF forces in Jordan Rift Valley

Palestinians reported Sunday that Israel has handed over the body of a terrorist from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), who was killed in 1976 during an exchange of fire between a terrorist cell and IDF forces in the Jordan Rift Valley.

Hundreds of Palestinians, headed by member of the DFLP Politburo Taysir Khalid and Governor of Qalqilya Rabeeh Khandaqji received the body of Hafez Abu Zant at the Jaljulia Crossing. The procession then continued to Qalqilya, where an official military ceremony was held.

After the ceremony, the body was transported to the terrorist's family in Nablus. Sources in the Palestinian Authority noted that Abu Zant will be buried on Monday in a military funeral.

According to reports, the body, which was buried at a cemetery for enemy casualties in Israel, was included in the list of 84 terrorists' bodies which were intended to be handed over to the Palestinian Authority last July.

The Minister of civil affairs at the Palestinian authority said at the time that the Authority reached an agreement with Israel over the repatriation of bodies of Palestinians who took part in terrorist activities against Israel from 1967.

In the past, Israel has handed over bodies of Palestinian terrorists, including the July 2008 exchange deal with Hezbollah, which saw the return of the bodies of Eldad Regev and Udi Goldwasser, whose kidnapping sparked the Second Lebanon War.

Israeli sources have yet to confirm the report.
