Budapest mayor defends theater nomination

Mayor Istvan Tarlos says work of director Gyorgy Dorner, who Jewish groups claim has links to far-right groups, will be evaluated 'at an appropriate time'

The mayor of Budapest is defending his choice for director of a prestigious city theater after Jewish groups highlighted the nominee's links to far-right groups.

Mayor Istvan Tarlos said Thursday that the work of Gyorgy Dorner, who is also an actor and well known in Hungary as the voice of Eddie Murphy and Bruce Willis in dubbed films, would be evaluated "at an appropriate time" and asked the opposition for "patience and restraint."

Hungary's biggest Jewish organization and others also oppose Dorner because he named Istvan Csurka, an "emblematic figure" of anti-Jewish sentiment, as his deputy.

A playwright and former lawmaker, Csurka is known for his anti-Semitic speeches and articles.

Directors of other Budapest theaters also criticized Tarlos' decision.
