Saudis want UN council to discuss alleged plot

Saudi Arabia is asking that the alleged Iranian plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States be discussed in the UN Security Council. Saudi Arabia's UN Ambassador Abdallah Y. Al-Mouallimi's letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

In it he said the plot is not only "a heinous crime" but "a gross violation" of international treaties including those protecting diplomats. Al-Mouallimi asked Ban "to bring this matter to the attention of the Security Council." He did not say what action, if any, Saudi Arabia wants the UN's most powerful body to take. The council has already imposed four rounds of sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program. (AP)
