'George Costanza' speaks out for peace

Actor Jason Alexander currently visiting Israel through One Voice movement, takes part in Knesset meeting on two state solution, stresses importance of strengthening moderate views

The Knesset may be on recess until next week, but for one guest the doors were wide open on Monday. Jason Alexander, most known for his role as George Costanza on Seinfeld, took part in a special discussion of the Knesset Lobby for Promoting the Two-State Solution.

Ahead of the meeting he told members of the local and foreign press that he was happy to be visiting Israel as part of a One Voice movement delegation, an organization working to end the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Opening the meeting, lobby chairman Knesset Member Yoel Hasson (Kadima) said: "The responsibility of renewing negotiations with the Palestinian Authority lies completely with the Israeli government and its leader.

"This, in order to reach a final settlement that will bring an end to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state side by side with Israel.

"It must come before the world forces a bi-national state on Israel, causing it to no longer be the state of the Jewish people and bringing about the end of the Zionist dream.

Alexander noted that the activities of the One Voice movement in cooperation with the Knesset Lobby for Promoting the Two-State Solution reminds us that the end of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict obligates the moderate voices in the region to be more determined than the extremist voices. He added that he was there to strengthen those moderate voices.

Minister Moshe Ya'alon presented a different view, claiming: "It is a mistake to think that the Israeli Palestinian conflict is the source of all problems and instability in the Middle East," he told the actor.

He also criticized the Palestinian president who he believes "denies the existence of the Jewish people, claims that Jews don't deserve a state and refuses to accept that any agreement would mark the end of the conflict and put an end to all demands."

On Sunday Alexander met with a Palestinian delegation led by Jibril Rajoub. The two sides discussed a number of political topics as well as the formulation of a strategy to promote the peace process. Alexander will be in Israel for the rest of the week.
