China official approves of Taiwan peace accord vow

A Chinese official said Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou's call for a cross-strait peace accord is "in the interest of the Chinese race."
Wednesday's statement by China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Yang Yi comes amid continuing rows in Taiwan over Ma's proposal. Ma said last week he would seek a China peace accord if re-elected next January. He added the move may require a referendum after the opposition charged the treaty will hurt Taiwan's sovereignty. (AP)
