EU urges Israel to nix accelerated settlement construction plans

EU chief diplomat Catherine Ashton has called on Israel to reverse its decision to accelerate construction in east Jerusalem and the West Bank, a measure that Israel annouced in response to the Palestinian Authority's accession into UNESCO. "We call on Israel to reverse this decision," Ashton said in a statement, expressing "deep concern".
"Israeli settlement activity is illegal under international law, including East Jerusalem, and is an obstacle to peace." Ashton said. (AFP)
