'Romeo and Juliet' gets Jewish twist
Shirley MacLaine to star in 'The Locals', which adds Jewish/Italian touch to Shakespeare's classic tale
Veteran screen star Shirley MacLaine has been cast in a film called "The Locals", Deadline reported. The movie, which will be directed by Sue Kramer ("Gray Matters") adds a Jewish/Italian twist to Shakespeare’s classic play "Romeo and Juliet".
“These two cultures have so much in common,” Kramer told Deadline. “Love of gab, love of food, they talk with their hands, and they feed you with guilt.”
Production for ”The Locals" starts this fall in the Bronx. Both Alan Arkin ("Get Smart", "Little Miss Sunshine") and Vera Farmiga ("The Departed", "Up in the Air") are in talks to join the cast, according to multiple reports.
Another "Romeo and Juliet" film is being produced simultaneously, starring young Oscar-nominee Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet. The movie is being directed by Carlo Carlei ("Fluke", "The Last Legion") and was written by Julian Fellowes, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind "Gosford Park".
