Shalit drew sketches, kept journal in captivity

Formerly captive soldier kept sane by drawing his hometown and keeping record of his thoughts, experiences. He was forced to leave the records behind

IDF soldier Gilad Shalit spent much of his time in Hamas captivity drawing pictures and keeping a log of his thoughts and experiences, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Sunday.

About a year into his captivity, Shalit was supplied with sheets of paper and writing utensils, which he used to create sketches of his hometown, Mitzpe Hila, memorizing its layout as he went along. After completing the drawings, Shalit wrote down and studied the names of the town's inhabitants.

The captive soldier also used the scarce, unbound bits of paper that he was given in order to write down his thoughts and experiences – a record that he was forced to leave behind, along with his drawings, upon his release.

Shalit's captors who held him in a basement cell in the Gaza Strip, provided him with a treadmill, so that he would remain in shape.

On Saturday, Shalit was released from the Rambam Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to remove shrapnel that was lodged in his hand.

The former POW sustained the wounds during the battle that preceded his capture in 2006. The wounds remained untreated throughout his captivity.
