Israel gears up for general strike

The meeting held Sunday between Histadrut Labor Union Chairman Ofer Eini and Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz at the office of the National Labor Court President Nili Arad, ended without results. At the end of the meeting Eini noted that "there are no happy tidings for the Israeli nation, the Finance ministry remains unmoved."

Arad offered the sides the chance to hold negotiations under the auspices of the Labor Court but the Histadrut refused. Eini added that during the talks "no progress was made, nothing changed. There will be a strike tomorrow from 6 am, unless the Labor Court says otherwise." Among the organizations going on strike: Airports, universities, the Dan and Egged bus companies, government offices and Israel Railways. (Omri Efraim)
