2 killed after train hits ATV

Northbound train hits overturned ATV on railroad tracks between Hadera, Emek Hefer; service disrupted

Two people were killed Monday afternoon when the all terrain vehicle (ATV) they were riding was struck by an Israel Railways passenger train. The ATV was on the railroad tracks between Hadera and Emek Hefer when it was hit by the northbound train.

Paramedics pronounced the men, ages 28 and 58, dead at the scene. "We found two people near the scene (of the accident). There was nothing else we could do but pronounce their death," paramedic Yaron Levy told Ynet.

Train service between Tel-Aviv and Haifa was suspended in the aftermath of the accident. Hadera police cordoned off the area.

According to an initial investigation into the circumstances of the accident, the two victims were hit by the train after their ATV overturned on the railroad tracks.

Passengers aboard the train initially thought it had hit a person who was crossing the tracks.

Deputy Commander of the Hadera Police Superintendent Rani Raz told Ynet that it appears the two ATVs attempted to cross the tracks when one of them got stuck.

The passengers of the ATV that managed to cross the tracks turned back to help their friends, when they were hit by the train.

The two were thrown clear by the force of the impact, he added. The circumstances of the accident are under investigation.
