Berlusconi's party backs Monti to be new PM

Leaders of Silvio Berlusconi's party have given their approval for economist Mario Monti to try to form a government, but say it can only last just long enough to implement measures to save Italy from financial disaster.
Angelino Alfano, head of the conservative party, says whether the party will actually support any Monti government depends on who is in the Cabinet and details of his program. Alfano says no politicians who opposed Berlusconi while the media mogul was in power should join the new government. (AP)
