Poor fuel quality may delay flights

Several months after fuel contamination brought flights to halt at Ben-Gurion Airport, lab tests find problem in fuel-water separation system

The Israeli Airports Authority has announced possible delays in flights scheduled to leave Ben-Gurion International Airport on Sunday night due to poor quality of the fuel supplied by the Paz Aviation Assets company.

Delays are expected in long-haul flights scheduled to take off after 8 pm.

According to the IAA, lab tests have revealed a "problem in the fuel-water separation system".

In May, a mysterious jet fuel contamination brought air traffic at Ben-Gurion Airport to a halt.

Israel's air traffic plunged into chaos for two days due to the crisis, with airlines estimating damages in millions of dollars.

An International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) mission which visited Israel in July ruled that the decision to suspend all flights as soon as jet fuel contamination was suspected was the right thing to do.

The International Civil Aviation Organization inquiry joined those set up by the Transportation and National Infrastructure ministries.

The Transportation Ministry's investigation focuses on airport emergency contingencies, while the Infrastructure Ministry's probe aims to find the nature and source of the contaminating agent.

An Infrastructure Ministry statement said that the panel probing the matter "has submitted its interim report in June and it pursuing an in-depth examination of the matter for its final report."
