Muslim and Christian groups say nine people are dead after communal clashes in central Nigeria, a region often violently divided by faith. The fighting occurred Monday around villages near the city of Jos, which has seen hundreds killed in recent years in disturbances. Advocacy groups said the fighting happened in different areas.
A Muslim group said Monday it collected six dead bodies, while a Christian group said it counted three. A spokesman for the military in Jos said at least seven had died. The clashes are the latest night attack in Nigeria, an oil-rich country of more than 160 million people split between a largely Muslim north and Christian south. (AP)
