Lebanese woman hit by Katyusha

Rocket apparently fired towards Israel hits south Lebanese village, wounds woman. No group claims responsibility

A woman was injured in southern Lebanon on Sunday when a rocket apparently fired from the Bint Jbeil area towards Israel hit a Lebanese border village, security sources in Lebanon said. Thus far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Security sources said the rocket was fired from the Wadi al-Qaisiyeh area, about 2 km (one mile) from the frontier and landed in the village of Hula inside Lebanon.

The rocket had landed in an apartment where the woman resided, according to AFP.

Two weeks ago several rockets were fired across the border from Lebanon at Israel, the first such incident since 2009. Lebanon's army said Israel launched four rockets in return.

Hezbollah sources denied any connection to the rocket fire. UNIFIL, which has a peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon, has launched an investigation into the incident, but a spokesman for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon was quoted by Beirut's radio as saying that "UNIFIL rejects reports suggesting any violation of UN Resolution 1701 and is working to restore normalcy."

Initially, the Al-Qaeda affiliated Abdullah Azzam Brigades took responsibility for the rocket fire but a week later withdrew their statement.

The initial statement noted: "The Rocket unit of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades bombed the settlements of the Zionist enemy in northern Palestine. The rockets hit their targets."

The border region has been largely quiet in the five years since Israel and Lebanon's Shiite militant group Hezbollah fought a 34-day war in 2006. But there have been concerns that tensions over the nine-month uprising in Syria and tougher Western sanctions against Iran could trigger violence.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said on Sunday he believed pro-Syrian Hezbollah was behind Friday's bombing in southern Lebanon which wounded five French soldiers from the UNIFIL peacekeeping force.

There was no immediate response from Hezbollah. The group had condemned the bombing, saying it targeted Lebanon's security and stability.
