IDF eyes tunnel-bunkers pilot program

Military prepared to launch first underground weapon and munitions storage facility. Tunnels meant to ensure better protection of arms

The IDF is gearing to launch it pilot program for a network of underground weapon and munitions tunnel-bunkers, Ynet learned on Tuesday.
The first tunnel-bunker, which will be located in northern Israel ,will become operational in 2012. It stands to stretch dozens of yards long and will be able to hold armored vehicles as well.

The tunnel's construction is estimated as NIS 10 million (roughly $2.65 million).
Munitions tunnel-bunkers are used by various Western armies, including the US Army .They provide better protection for weapons and munitions, ensuring better fire and anti-missile safeguards.
If the pilot program proves successful, future tunnel-bunkers will be used to store military spare parts and possibly emergency supplies such as food and medical supplies.
  • The project is headed by the IDF Technological and Logistics Directorate and according to the military it has been over two years in the making.
