Jordan proposes independent elections committee

None

Jordan's Cabinet has proposed setting up the country's first independent electoral commission, in a gesture to reformers.

The new body would run Jordan's elections instead of the Interior Ministry, which has been accused of tampering with poll results to favor pro-government candidates. Critics charge the ministry with producing docile parliaments that overcome opposition to unpopular government policies. (AP)
