Report: US plans change in immigration rule

The Obama administration plans a rule change that would help reduce the time some illegal immigrants are separated from their citizen relatives while the immigrants try to win legal status in the United States.

A senior administration official says the administration wants to let some illegal immigrants stay in the US while they ask the government to waive a rule that otherwise would prohibit them from coming back into the country for up to 10 years. Waivers are available for illegal immigrants who can show that their absence would cause an "extreme hardship" for their citizen spouse. (AP)
