Strauss firing dozens of managers

Food products manufacturer decides to cancel marketing management positions in company's different division as part of streamlining process

The Strauss Group has begun dismissing workers and narrowing down the food products manufacturer's marketing headquarters.

Calcalist has learned that the company is in the process of laying off dozens of workers, starting with 10 employees form Strauss' marketing headquarters who were fired last Tuesday.

The move will include the dismissal of dozens of marketing workers from different divisions in the group. Some of those fired are marketing managers who arrived in the company only several months ago.

The company decided to cancel marketing management positions as part of a streamlining process, and will not hire new workers to replace those who were discharged.

Strauss said in response, "In light of the recent changes in the external environment, alongside the company's strategy and changing needs, Strauss Israel's marketing headquarters is streamlining its activities these days and undergoing certain adjustment and concrete changes."

Strauss Group is Israel's second largest food manufacturer, after Tnuva and before the Osem Nestlé Group. The company employs 6,000 workers in Israel and 7,000 abroad.

Like other leading food manufacturers, Strauss has also been forced to deal in recent months with protests against the cost of living in Israel, which included demonstrations outside the homes of the company's executives and Chairwoman Ofra Strauss.

Following the social protests, Strauss, Tnuva and Tara reduced the prices of some of their dairy products, including cottage cheese and soft white cheese. When the protest moves grew stronger, Strauss announced that it would reduce the prices of 36 products by 5% to 10% - including hummus, chocolate, coffee and cocoa.

The company said in a statement that it would take in most manpower workers and freeze executives' salaries in the coming year.

Calcalist revealed last week that Strauss' competitor, Tnuva, was also dismissing dozens of workers from its food division and dairy concern as part of a streamlining process following the social protest and consumer boycott which affected its sales.
