Solomons hit by 6.6 quake; no tsunami threat

Santa Cruz Island in the South Pacific has rocked by a magnitude-6.6 earthquake, but there have been no reports of injuries and authorities say there is no threat of a tsunami.

 

The United States Geological Survey reported that the temblor struck Monday afternoon about 219 miles (353 kilometers) east of the town of Kira Kira in the Solomon Islands. Santa Cruz and surrounding islands are remote and sparsely populated. (AP)
