Assad: Victory close if Syrians remain steadfast

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, battling 10 months of protests against his rule, said on Tuesday that "victory is near" if Syrians remained steadfast.

Assad, speaking in public for the first time since June last year, said that "foreign planning" was behind the uprising but that outside forces "did not find a foothold in the revolution that they had hoped for". (Reuters)
