Lebanon says arrested veteran spy for Israel

Elias Younes suspected of providing Israel with access to Lebanese communications system, information on naval security means

The Lebanese Armed Forces arrested Elias Younes who has been named the eldest spy working for Israel, Lebanese reports said Wednesday. The Al-Manar network reported that Younes had been cooperating with Israel since 1977 and had supplied it with access to the Lebanese communications system through which the Palestine Liberation Organization sent messages to its operatives.

Youness had worked at the OGERO telecommunications provider and reportedly provided his Israeli handler names, numbers and communications devices.

It was also claimed that the Lebanese spy provided Israel with information on members of a Lebanese naval security committee and naval communication means.

The report stated that Younes had supplied information on optical devices, names and telephone numbers between 1998 and 2003. He had allegedly provided Israel with a list of internet addresses of Lebanese companies in 2003. He allegedly received tens of thousands of dollars for his efforts.

"Younes provided the enemy with details on naval security means and vessel movement. He relayed to Israel information on the ministry of communications and its plans," the report said.

It was reported that Younes had confessed to the charges and indicted in a military court for cooperating with the enemy and meeting officers outside Lebanon. "He is charged with counts punishably by death," the report stated.
