150 social activists protest opening of Habima Theatre

Police arrest three protesters during demonstration in front of newly renovated national theatre building. 'We don't want luxury, we want our city back,' the demonstrators chant

Three people were arrested Sunday evening during a demonstration organized by the social protest movement in front of Habima Theatre in Tel Aviv.

 

The demonstration was held simultaneously with an inauguration ceremony for the new theatre building, attended by Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai and President Shimon Peres.

"We don't want luxury, we want our city back," chanted some 150 protesters, who blocked the roads leading to the theatre.

 

Dozens of police, Border Guard and Yassam officers maintained the order and arrested three protesters who refused to clear the road."

 

"On the one hand we are protesting against a lack in public housing and on the other hand we see in front of our eyes the opening of Habima, with nicely dressed people enjoying refreshments," one of the protesters told Ynet.
