Syrian rebels claim control over 50% of country

Recent clashes between Free Syria Army, Damascus forces leave 20 dead

Syria's rebel forces claimed Wednesday to have taken over 50% of the country, asserting previous statements that "Damascus is in a panic."

Free Syria Army commander Colonel Riad al-Assad said that despite his forces control of half of Syria, the troops were avoiding taking over entire areas for fear that their fighting with President Bashar Assad's forces would leave havoc in their wake.

Clashes between Assad's forces and the rebels claimed 20 lives Wednesday. The UN believed over 5,000 have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011.

The UN Security Council is struggling on the wording of a resolution against Syria.

Earlier, Vladimir Chizhov, Russia's envoy to the European Union, said that there was no chance that the Western-Arab draft of the resolution would pass without it clearly ruling out any potential military intervention.

The draft "is missing the most important thing: a clear clause ruling out the possibility that the resolution could be used to justify military intervention in Syrian affairs from outside. For this reason I see no chance this draft could be adopted," Chizhov said.

Russia says it will exercise its veto power in the UN Security Council should any resolution including a military operation will be presented to it.
