Turkish jets hit suspected rebel targets
Turkey's military says its warplanes have bombed three suspected Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq. The military says the jets hit the three suspected rebel shelters in Iraq's Zap region on Friday near the Turkish border, then returned safely after an "effective" operation.
In an unrelated operation, authorities said Turkish troops killed five Kurdish rebels in a shootout in southeast Turkey earlier Friday. The rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, some based in northern Iraq, have been fighting for autonomy in Turkey's largely Kurdish southeast since 1984 in fighting that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
