Teen who stabbed Arab gets year in prison

Two Israelis ran over 15-year-old Arab boy and then beat and stabbed him. Judge hopes verdict will deter others from repeating such violence

An 18-year-old Israeli who stabbed and assaulted an Arab teen for racist reasons a year ago was sentenced to one year in prison by the Nazareth District Court on Sunday. The court also ordered the defendant to pay the victim NIS 30,000 (roughly $8,100).

Last April, the defendant, who was 17 at the time, assaulted Arab teens aged 15 together with his friends. He initially tried to run over two Arab teens together with a friend, but without success. The two then hit an Arab teen after which the defendant stepped out of his car and tried to stab the boy who managed to escape the scene.

The defendant then returned to his car with his friend and the two chased after another Arab teen whom they hit with their car. They stepped out of their vehicle holding a knife and a club. "The defendant stabbed the teen on his left thigh and the other beat his head with a club," the verdict read. "They two beat him while shouting out 'die, you Arab.'" The boy sustained a serious injury to his ear.

The two victims were taken to the Poriya Medical Center in Tiberias.

During the trial, the defendant admitted to the charges as part of a plea bargain but later recanted. He was nevertheless convicted of aggravated battery and unlawful possession of a knife.

"A 15-year-old boy begged for his life but the defendant and his friend continued to beat him and ignored his cries," the verdict read.

The judge wrote that such a crime warrants a conviction to deter others from repeating the acts.
