Rockets hit south; Air Force bombs Gaza

Palestinians say IDF strikes targets in Strip after three rockets explode in southern Israel Saturday

The Air Force bombed several targets in the Gaza Strip after three Qassam rockets were fired at Israel Saturday, Palestinian sources told Ynet early Sunday.

 

According to other reports, Hamas security officials decided to evacuate all headquarters in the Strip for fear of further Israeli strikes.

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit confirmed that Air Force jets attacked a weapons factory and a smuggling tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip overnight. Direct hits were carried out. It was also stated the strikes were in response to the firing of rockets at Israel over the weekend.

 

According to Gaza sources, IDF aircraft bombed an open area west of Rafah, just hundreds of meters away from the Egyptian border, around midnight. Rescue services in the Strip reported no injuries in the strike but said several structures in the area were damaged.

 

A short time later, the Palestinians reported that the Air Force struck a tunnel in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip. No injuries were reported in the second attack but the tunnel was damaged.

 

The IDF confirmed the strikes and added that the army targeted a weapons factory and a terrorists' smuggling tunnel.

 

Rocket fire continues  

Two Qassam rockets exploded in an open area in the Ashkelon Beach Regional Council Saturday evening. No injuries or damages were reported. A short while later, a rocket hit an open area in the Eshkol region council. No injuries or damages were reported in that strike either.

 

On Friday, a rocket exploded in a soccer field in southern Israel.

 

The past week saw increasing rocket fired from Gaza that in turn prompted Israeli strikes on various targets in the Strip. The heads of local authorities in the Gaza region are expected to meet with the IDF's Southern Command chief in the coming days and express their displeasure over the growing rocket fire in the area in recent weeks.
