State eyes tighter control over gambling

Justice Ministry tasked with formulating recommendations to combat illegal gambling, money laundering

The Justice Ministry has been tasked with forming a special team to formulate recommendations by which the State could regulate and monitor gambling in Israel.

The team will also have to formulate recommendations meant to minimize illegal gambling, minors' exposure to gambling and criminal elements' foothold in the field of legal gambling as means of money laundering.

The team will be headed by a Justice Ministry official and will include representatives from the Culture and Sports Ministry, the police and the Israel Money Laundering Prohibition Authority.

Israel's illegal gambling scene in Israel is said to amount to NIS 15 billion (approx. $4 billion) a year. Legal gambling is managed by the Israeli Lottery Commission and Israel Sports Gambling Commission. Both bodies welcomed the move.

The ministry has been asked to present its recommendations to the government by September.
