Sources: 7 dead in Oakland university shooting

Police say suspect detained after attack at Oikos University; 'there is a crazy guy inside,' woman reportedly said after fleeing building

A suspect was detained Monday in a shooting attack at an Oakland Christian university that sources said has left at least seven people dead.

 

Law enforcement sources close to the investigation told The Associated Press that at least seven people have died after the morning shooting at Oikos University.

Meanwhile, police said a suspect was detained in the attack. Officer Johnna Watson did not give any other details about the arrest.

 

"I can confirm that we do have one person who has been detained that we believe is possibly responsible for this shooting," Watson said.

 

Four victims arrived at Highland Hospital for treatment, said spokeswoman Jerri Randrup.

  

 

Earlier, television news footage showed officers surrounding the building in search of the suspect. The footage also showed wounded people being carried out of the building, and more gurneys were being brought in.

 

"One of the people who was inside the building, she was saying there is a crazy guy inside," witness Brian Snow told KGO-TV.

"She did say someone got shot in the chest right next to her before she got taken off in an ambulance."

 

Eyewitness Angie Johnson, 52, of San Leandro, said she was running errands in a nearby industrial complex when she saw a young woman run out of the university with blood pouring from her arm, crying: "I've been shot, I've been shot."

 

Johnson said she waited with the woman for medical help to arrive, and was told that the gunman was a man in her nursing class who stood up and shot one person at point blank range in the chest before spraying the room with bullets.

 

"She said he looked crazy all the time," Johnson said. "But they never knew how far he would go."

 

The victim "had a hole in her right arm the size of a silver dollar with blood coming down," she added.

 

According of its website, Oikos University offers studies in theology, music, nursing and Asian medicine.
