White House: Wait and see on Syria cease-fire deal

The White House says it is watching Syria for signs it will comply with a Thursday cease-fire deadline, but it cautioned that President Bashar Assad's regime has offered empty promises in the past to ease its aggression against domestic opposition.

President Barack Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, said Wednesday that the administration supports a cease-fire plan brokered by special envoy Kofi Annan. Syria promised to stop its fighting by the deal's deadline, but indicated it retained the right to respond to aggression. (AP)
