Peres undergoes hernia repair surgery

President was diagnosed with hernia during State visit to Canada, but completed trip before undergoing treatment

President Shimon Peres' office said the 88-year-old has undergone surgery for a hernia discovered during his State visit to Canada.

 

The procedure was sucessfull, and the president is feeling well, according to his personal doctor, Professor Rafi Walden. He has spoken to his family and aides and asked to convey deep gratitude to his well-wishers.

Peres' spokeswoman Ayelet Frisch said that the hernia was discovered halfway through the president's week-long trip that started Sunday. She said Peres' doctor treated him there, and he continued with his work schedule as planned.

 

According to the statement, Peres returned to Israel on Friday afternoon and was taken to the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer to undergo a surgery to repair the hernia. He is set to be discharged from the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer on Sunday. Frisch said he was "feeling fine" as he went in.

 

Peres is known for his long work days. He is not known to suffer from any health problems. However, he was hospitalized in 2009 for a series of tests after he collapsed while making a speech at the Rabin Center.
