Forum on Civic Responsibility eyes political arena

Professors, former politicians and rabbis join hands 'to influence Zionist, social, economic national vision'

In a common goal to influence the vision and policy of the nation, the Forum on Civic Responsibility annunced its formation on Wednesday.

The FCR was founded by Moshe Ben Attar, former director-general of the Israeli Zionism Council, and among its members are some of Israel's most prominent rabbis, academician, professors and attorneys, as well as several former politicians.

Relates Stories:

Among the founding members of the Forum are Rabbi Yoel Bin Nun, formerly one of the leading rabbis of the settler public; Prof. Eliezer Schweid, former MK Rabbi Michael Melchior (Meimad-labor), former Ambassador Yitzhak Meir, Prof. Sergio Della Pergola and former Labor ministaer Ophir Paz Pines.

The CRF has drafted several policy recommendations "aimed to form a national Zionist social and economic vision," which it wishes present for public debate, a statement by the forum said.

The document underscores the importance of a Jewish majority as a basis for a Jewish and democratic state. It calls to ensure the Jewish majority in any future peace negotiations on boundaries, and to expedite conversion procedures for new immigrants.

It further dealt with social and economic issues, advising to avoid further privatization of public institutions, and to subsidize higher education. The forum also presented its opinions on Israel’s government system, including raising the election threshold.

The forum also marks the cancellation of Tal Law as necessary to achieve its goals.
