'Arab rapist' gets early release

Parole board cuts one third off sentence of Sabar Kashour, who was convicted of rape because he falsely presented himself as Jewish and single to woman he had sex with

A parole board has decided to cut one third off the sentence of Sabar Kashour, an Arab citizen jailed for telling a woman he slept with that he was Jewish and single, Ynet learned on Sunday.

Kashour was originally sentenced to a year and a half in prison which was later cut to nine months following a successful appeal.

He began serving his sentence on February 19 and was meant to be released in September. On Sunday, the parole board granted Kashour's request for an early release which is now set for June 4.

Kashour was convicted after telling a Jewish woman, with whom he had consensual sex, he was a single Jewish man interested in a serious relationship, even though he is Arab and married.

During the hearing, Kashour's lawyer, Attorney Amir Sela, argued that his client is eligible for early release noting that the probation service had recommended not to sentence him to imprisonment. He noted that Kashour had expressed regret and has fully internalized the severity of his actions.

A State representative opposed an early release on the grounds that the Supreme Court had already considerably reduced Kashour's sentence. He noted that the State had tried to trace the victim and have her give her version to the court, but that she could not be found.

"I wonder what would have happened if an indictment had been filed in Europe against a Jew in opposite circumstances," Kashour's attorney said. "I find it strange that the victim wasn't found."
