UN approves two-year extension for rights chief

The UN General Assembly has unanimously approved a two-year extension for UN human rights chief Navi Pillay, a South African jurist who has spoken out often on rights violations against protesters who rose up during and after the Arab Spring including in Syria.

 

The 193-member world body approved the extension Thursday by consensus. Pillay, whose term expires Aug. 31, will now serve as High Commissioner for Human Rights until Aug. 31, 2014. (AP)
