Chess: Gelfand, Anand's Game 11 ends with tie

Second to last game of series between Israeli chess player, world champion Viswanathan Anand ends in yet another draw

Israeli chess player Boris Gelfand faced his Indian opponent, reigning world champion Viswanathan Anand, on Saturday afternoon for Game 11 of the Chess World Championship. The second to last game of series ended with yet another tie of 5.5:5.5.

The tenth round of the 12-game championship, taking place at Moscow's State Tretyakov Gallery, ended in a tie, setting the score at 5-5. While Anand had a clear advantage at first, Gelfand fought back. But he had to settle for a draw after 49 moves, with just under eight minutes left in the second time control.

The championship started out with six consecutive draws followed by a win for Gelfand in the Game 7. The following game marked a setback for Gelfand, who managed to level score yet again in games 9 and 10.

The final part of the series is to take place on Monday; Gelfand is to play with the black pieces. If the game ends in a draw, the two players will enter a series of four rapid games that will decide the title.

If Gelfand wins, he will be the first Israeli world champion in chess. The winner is to receive $1.53 million, while the loser will get $1.02 million.
