Stringent punishment for Eritrean migrant convicted of robbery

Tel Aviv District Court Judge Zvi Gurfinkel on Wednesday sentenced Eritrean refugee Kabri Engston to 4.5 years in prison. Kabri was convicted of robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony after he and a partner robbed a young woman in Tel Aviv.

The judge wrote in his ruling that the rising number of similar cases had created a need to deter foreign citizens in Israel from crime through increased punitive measures. "These people must understand that to earn the right to stay here they have an obligation to respect the laws of this country, and not commit violent acts," wrote Gurfinkel.
