Indictment: Palestinians plotted to kidnap soldier

West Bank man charged with cooperating with three Palestinian inmates who planned to force Israel into another prisoner exchange deal

Three Palestinian prisoners plotted to kidnap an IDF soldier after they were not included in the Shalit prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Hamas, according to an indictment filed on Tuesday with the Beersheba District Court against Ramzi Arar, 32, from the Palestinian village of Zurif in the West Bank.

According to the indictment, filed by the Southern District Prosecutor's Office, the three prisoners, who belong to the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, met in prison last January and decided to kidnap an IDF soldier in hopes of forcing another prisoner exchange agreement on Israel.

One of the prisoners suggested that Arar, his relative, advance the kidnapping plan by carrying out a terror attack in Israel - either by opening fire or panting a bomb in Ashdod or Beit Shemesh. Arar was also scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia and meet with a man who was supposed to fund the purchase of weapons needed for the planned attack.

But in early May Arar was arrested by Israeli security forces in Ashdod.

Arar was charged with contacting a foreign agent, plotting to commit a crime and residing in Israel illegally.

Indictments against the other Palestinians involved in the plot are expected to be filed in the near future.
