Shayetet 13 gets new commander

Colonel R. assumes leadership of naval commando unit which has been playing central role in Israel's defense in past few years

A new commander holding the rank of colonel has assumed leadership of the IDF's naval commando unit, Shayetet 13. The previous commander, Col. S., served in the role for three years and is leaving to pursue academic studies.

Under Col. S.'s leadership, the unit carried out dozens of operations, mostly secret, on a particularly large scale and beyond Israeli borders. Navy Commander Major-General Ram Rothberg said at a ceremony Tuesday that Shayetet 13 commandos have mounted complex missions under fire.

"You have been required to demonstrate the highest levels of planning, training and execution in all possible combat arenas and have taken immediate action at every operational turn. Under Col. S.'s leadership Shayetet 13 has been at the forefront of the IDF's activity. "
