Minister: No order to stifle social protest

"Those who rioted were not social activists, but people who came with the intent to block roads and cause damage," Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said in response to allegations of excessive use of force by police during a social justice protest in Tel Aviv last weekend.
The minister denied that the government had instructed police to stifle the protest. "It's nonsense. A minister does not give instructions to the police," he said. (Omri Efraim)
