Dozens of products slated for markdown

As social protest gains speed once more, Treasury orders reduction of home appliances, clothes, various popular imports

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz ordered the markdown of dozens of consumer goods Wednesday, many of them imported products that until now entailed high taxation.

Among the products slated for an immediate, 10% markdowns, are small home appliances, such as driers, vacuum cleaners, fans, toasters, lamps, batteries etc.

October will see the prices of home entertainment systems go down by 15%, which will significantly cheapen the prices of televisions, stereos and DVD players.

Starting January 2013, the prices of clothing, excluding lingerie, is also expected to decrease.

Additionally, the Treasury has approved a series of recommendations promoted by the Kedmi Committee on the food market, ordering the immediate markdown of dozens of products, including fish, spices, nuts, dried fruit, a variety of fresh meats and juices.

The ministry has also ordered the gradual decrease of various canned goods, sweets and grains, which will take place across the next three years.
