Netanya hit-and-run: Suspect still at large

Sources privy to criminal world say Shoshan Barbi, who is suspected of killing three women during hit-and-run accident on Friday, will not turn himself in. 'He'll hide in an Arab village, grow a beard and escape to Oman'

The police on Sunday continued its manhunt after Netanya resident Shoshan Barbi, 35, who is suspected of killing three women in a hit-and-run accident on Friday.

While the police are convinced that they are close to apprehending the suspect, Netanya crime elements say that Barbi won't turn himself in so easily.

"No one believes that he will turn himself in. This time he will have to serve 20 year in prison, so he won't stay in Israel," said a Netanya resident who is privy to the city's underworld.

Barbi, who was jailed five times in the past, is known in the crime world has a violent man with a short temper. "So far all his arrests were short-term, but this time it’s the real deal, so he will never turn himself in," the source said.

According to suspicion, Barbi escaped the scene of the accident, after running over and killing Alexandra Rubinov, 66, Svetlana Yegudaev, 56, and her daughter Shoshana Yegudaev, 25. The three were fatally hit while crossing the crosswalk.

'He could be hiding in Arab village'

Speculations continue to grow about Barbi's whereabouts. "Last time he escaped from the police he hid for two weeks in an Arab village and the police couldn't locate him. He'll probably hide there for a month, grow a beard and escape to Uman while posing as a haredi man with a fake passport," said the Netanya resident.

Other sources estimated that Barbi is waiting until there are no traces of alcohol or drugs in his blood. "He won't take the chance of being accused of drunk driving. He'll wait until he's clean and maybe then turn himself in. Although he's strong, he can't run forever. He has a wife and kids," said another source.

Meanwhile, the wife of Yochai Glicksman, the second suspect who turned himself in shortly after the incident, said Barbi came to their house after the accident and asked her husband to report to the police.

Glicksman at first told police officers he was the one driving the vehicle at the time of the accident but later retracted his admission.

Earlier, Netanya Mayor Miriam Fireberg appealed to Barbi, asking that he turn himself into the police. "We need to separate between his (criminal) past and this tragic incident. I can picture him crying right now," she said in a radio interview.
